Turkish Spiced Chicken Thighs with Tahini Yogurt Recipe

Adapted from Bon Appetite (January 2011) – See our version

Tahini Yogurt:

3.5  TBSP fresh lemon juice

1 TBSP Baharat Seasoning (recipe follows)

1 large garlic clove, pressed

1/2 cup plain yogurt

1/4 cup tahini paste

Combine lemon juice, Baharat seasoning, and garlic in a medium bowl. Mix in yogurt and tahini. Season with salt to taste.

Chicken:

8 chicken thighs

1/2 cup coarsely grated onion

2 TBSP fresh lemon juice

2 TBSP olive oil

2 tsp Baharat seasoning

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Whisk onion, lemon juice, olive oil and Baharat seasoning in a large bowl. Add the chicken. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Marinate at least one hour.

Add oil to a large pan (we used a dutch oven) that can also go in the oven if possible. Sear the chicken thighs, about 3-4 minutes each side until golden brown. Place in a baking dish or keep in the same pan and cover with remaining marinade. Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until cooked through.

Baharat seasoning:

1.5 TBSP dried mint

1 TBSP dried oregano

1.5 tsp ground cinnamon

1.5 tsp ground nutmeg

1.5 tsp ground cumin

1.5 tsp ground nutmeg

Using pestle or blunt end of a wooden spoon mash all ingredients and 1 TBSP freshly ground black pepper in a mortar or small bowl 2-3 minutes.
